• -άն. κϰόδλο-որ և ϰσοϰὸδειλος, ϰοϰόο-δειλος, ϰορϰόδιλος, ϰρεϰνδειλος ևն. նշանա-կում է «մողէս» և յատկապէս «Նեղոսի մեծ մողէսը, որ է կոկորդիլոս». ըստ սմանց ծագում է *ϰροϰόδειρος ձևից (ϰρόϰος «քրքում» և δερω «մաշկել») և բուն նշանակում է «դեղնամորթ» (Bailly, Dict. gr-fr. 1910, էջ 113877). բայց ճշտագոյնն էլ *ϰουϰό-δ. ιλος «քարերի որդ» (կազմուած ϰρόϰη «խիճ»+ δρīλος «որդ» բառերից), ըստ որում մողէսը սիրում է տաքանալ յիռև քարերի վրայ։ Նման կազմութիւն ունի նաև սանս. krkalāsa-«մողէս», carkara-«խիճ»+ ás-e «նստել» բառերից (Boisaq 520)։ Յոյն բառը փոխառութեամբ տարա-ծուած է շատ լեզուների մէջ. ինչ. լտ. cro гodilus, ֆրանս. crocodile, իտալ. coccodril-le, մբգ. kokodrille, գերմ.
