[arabic word] bandivan «բան-աապան»=պհլ. bandikpān և սոռռ. ântot'k «բանտապահ». հմմտ. նաև Թուրֆանի սա-սան. պհլ. ban «կապ», banbē̄d «բանտա-պետ», banéstān «բանտ» (BSZ հտ. 33, Ν 99, էջ 157). բառիս բուն և նախնական նշանակութիւնն է «կապանք» և այս պատ-ճառով յաճախ ասում են տուն բանտի, այն է «կապարան»։ Իրանեան բառերին ցեղա-կից են զնդ. bañ̄d, սանս. bandh, bandhati, գոթ. bindan, հբգ. bintan, գերմ. binden, թրակ. βενδ-«կապել», յն. πεῖσμα (<*πενβ-σμα) «պարան, թոկ» πενϑερός «աներ» (հմմտ. սանս. bandhu «ազգական»), լտ. offendix «քահանայական փակեղի կապերը». լիթ. bendras «մասնակից ընկեր», միռլ. bunne «կապ»։ Այս բոլորի արմատն է հնխ. bhendh, ստորին ձայնդարձով bhndh, որ յետոյ արիականում դարձաւ նաև bendh> bandh «կապել» (Walde 537, Boisacq 758, 766, Trautmann 30, Kluge 57)։ Ի՞նչ պէտք է տար այս արմատը հայերէնի մէջ. հնխ. bh դառնում է հյ. բ, իսկ հնխ. b>հյ. պ։ Ըստ այսմ հնխ. bhndh կարող էր տալ հյ։ բանդ (Հիւբշ. Arm. Gram. 511). իբրև բնիկ հայ բառ, բայց որովհետև ունինք հյ. պինդ, որ հնխ. bendh ձևի կանոնաւոր ներկալա-ցուցիչն է (հմմտ. հինգ) և հարազատ հայե-րէն, և որովհետև «բանտ» իմաստը իրա-նեանի մէջ միայն կայ, ուստի հյ. բանդ փո-խառեալ է իրանեանից, որի հարազատ հա-յերէն ձևն է պինդ։ Իրանեանից փոխա-ռեալ է նաև վրաց. ბანდი բանդի «կապեալ»։ -Հիւբշ. 117։

Ակինեան, որից խնդրած էի ստուգել այս բանը, յայտնում է (նամակ 1927 յունիս 23), որ էջմիածնի գրադարանի թ. 1506-1516 Յայսմաւուրքներում այսպիսի մի սխալ ընթերցուած չէ գը-տած յիշեալ հատուածում։ Շատ կարե-վոր է քննել Վենետիկի ձեռագիրները։

Բազմ. 1898 225բ և Արրտ. 1898, 370բ), մինգր. օբեդ «աբեթ», սվան. հաբե-դի, հոբեդ «աբեթ», Մառ ИАН 1918, էջ 339 այս բառերը համարում է bed «վառել» ար-մատից. հմմտ. սվան. libdine «վառել», եթէ այսպէս է, ուրեմն բառը բնիկ Կովկա-ռեան կդառնայ և հետևաբար հայ ձևը կլինի վրացականից փոխառեալ։ Առ այժմ այս ստուգաբանութիւնը անհաստատ է թւում մեզ։

• ՓՈԽ.-Ըստ Bugge հայերէնից են եռաա-ռեալ գոթ. azētizō =յն. εύϰοπώτερον «հեշ-տագոյն», azêtaba=յն. ήδέως «սիրով», Բ. Կոր. ժա. 19 (մեր թրգմ. մտադիւր), Ատիմ. և, 6 յն. ή σπαταλῶσα (հայ թրգմ. գիրգ այ-րին)=գոթ. sō wizōndei in azētjam.-Bugge ցոյց է տալիս, թէ այս բառեոռ ա-րիշ գերմանացեղ բարբառներում չկան, տրուած ստուգաբանութիւններն էլ գղհա-ցուցիչ չեն, ուստի ենթադրում է թէ գոթ, azēts «դիւրաւ» փոխառեալ է հյ. ազատ ձևից։ Այս բառի մեջ ա-երը երկար էին, ինչպէս ցոյց է տալիս իրանականը. գոթա-կան լեզուն t ձայնից առաջ a չունէր, ուս-տի վերածեց e՝ պահելով երկարութիւնը, իսկ առաջին a-ն դարձաւ կարճ, որովհետև շեշտից առաջ գտնուելով՝ արդէն հայերէ-նում կարճ էր հնչւում։ (Այս բոլորը տե՛ս IF 5, 168-80, թրգմ. ՀԱ 1895, էջ 229,,-Իբր հայերէն բառ յիշում է Կոստանդին Պերփերոժէն. ὅνϰατα τὴν τῶν'Ἀρμενίων διάλεϰ-τον ἀζατον ἐϰάλουν «զոր հայերէն բարբառով ազատ կոչեն» (տե՛ս Du Cange 31)։
